Blog is a contraction for Weblog, which technically means putting some log or entry in a Web page. Blogs probably evolved from online diaries, with the earliest blogs being dated back to 1994. Soon, blogging began to rise in popularity, and now, there are more than 112 million blogs being tracked by the blog search engine Technorati.

There are different types of blogs. The most common among them is personal blog, wherein one person makes a blog as a diary or commentary. It is usually ran only by a single person, and it serves as a sentiment to everyday life, an online journal, a way of communication or a reflection on life or works of art. Today, there are also microblogging sites (like Twitter and Plurk) that allows blogging in less than 100 characters.
Blogs can also be typed according to genre. There are educational blogs, business blogs, exhibit blogs, quizzing blogs, collection or gallery blogs and travel blogs.
Blogs are also grouped based on their media types. A vlog contains videos, a linklog contains links, one that contains sketches is called sketchblog, and blogs that houses pictures are called photoblogs. Blogs with shorter posts and mixed media types are called tumblelogs.
Different websites now have blogs for them to share their updates to their visitors. Social networking sites like Friendster and Plurk maintains a blog for them to share their latest updates with the users. Blogging is used as a means of citizen journalism, and taking it to the extreme, a major blogging site has been banned on a country because of its provocative news against the government.
